Subject: [MASSBIRD] eBird Checklist - 29 Apr 2024 - Weston Station Pond - 35 species

Today a group of a dozen birders did an inaugural BBC field trip to the Great Blue Heron rookery in Weston. This trip will be repeated for the next three Mondays 5/6, 5/13 & 5/20, at the civilized hour of 9:30. Our two-hour walk yielded 35 species, mostly well-seen and often scoped for the benefit of the several newer birders. The walk started with a 'first-of-year' Baltimore Oriole and ended with a singing and nicely posted up Field Sparrow. Highlights included a rare visit to the rookery by a Great Egret, and as many as 20 Great Blue Herons engaged in courtship and nest-building activities. Dueling Belted Kingfishers put on a thrilling aerial display. Other early migrants included Yellow-rumped Warblers and Warbling Vireos. Non-avian species noted included Painted Turtles and an American Toad.
