Subject: [southbaybirds] Shannon Valley Open Space 4-28
This morning I birded Shannon Valley Open Space following the loop route
to paved trail along Hicks Road to Shannon and back to my car. This
varied trail is just seven minutes from my home.

Birds of interest were a NORTHERN FLICKER pair, HOUSE WREN and BLACK
HEADED GROSBEAK at the start. The first of seven singing LAZULI BUNTING
was heard along the switchback trail and the first of four BLUE GRAY
GNATCATCHER were here. The singing buntings were close together and high
on the ridge at the start but as I continued east they were lower and
closer to the trail.

I flushed a large BAND TAILED PIGEON flock after the footbridge and
heard one of two ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER and a single WILSON'S WARBLER.
Swallows and swifts were flying very high and were not counted. I heard
several distant ASH THROATED FLYCATCHER in the wooded ravine, then had
two pair along the Hicks Road paved trail. Maintenance mowing a grassy
area upset one flycatcher pair. Several WARBLING VIREO, HOUSE WRENS and
a single WESTERN FLYCATCHER were heard along Hicks. Five singing CAL.
THRASHERS were seen or heard along the trail and in residents yards.

At the corner of Hicks and Shannon I spotted a HOODED ORIOLE nest in fan
palm. Orioles were entering several trees here. One of my photos points
to the hanging nest seen from the road.
