Subject: [ia-bird] grassland birds in southern Iowa

On the afternoon of 4/17 we birded the Kellerton grassland in Ringgold
county. We stayed at the viewing platform to watch the sun set.
Some highlights:
--8 Upland Sandpipers (saw 2, heard others)
--4 Greater Prairie Chickens on the lek
--numerous Eastern Meadowlarks
--2 Brown Thrashers along the dirt road
---a Henslow's Sparrow calling from the field near the platform
---a Northern Bobwhite calling from the field to the south
---a Vesper Sparrow

Non-avian highlight: heard several coyotes howling before sundown.
