Today, the 21st, there are 3 Black Skimmers at the upper end of Sweetwater Reservoir, the second record for the lake and casual inland in the county. It is possible such birds may have arrived from the east from the Salton Sea/Gulf of California rather than "just" from the west from San Diego Bay. Still multiple Neotropic Cormorants there at dawn each morning. Yesterday morning, a three-hour seawatch at La Jolla produced a record-high summer from-shore tally of 21 southbound Cassin's Auklets. Not a big surprise given that small numbers have been passing there for a couple weeks now and Saturday's pelagic trip recorded good numbers in the first 10 miles from shore. Also a single southbound Common Murre and a Black Storm-Petrel. A Red-shouldered Hawk circling around the very tip of Point Loma at Cabrillo National Monument on 19 July was presumably an early post-breeding disperser that had gotten "stuck" there. A Northern Pintail at Lower Otay Lake on 14 July was probably a early-arriving post-breeding disperser. The first juvenile Willet on 17 July and juvenile Marbled Godwits on 21 July were right on time.
