Subject: [sd-birds] Codington County Long-eared Owls
It's been quite the winter for Long-eared Owls in Codington County, having stumbled upon 6 of them myself from November up until now with 3 currently living at Pelican Lake State Park. I've had suspicions that they have been nesting in the park for a while now as I've seen these owls in the park periodically since 2023 but today I finally found their nest this evening after finishing up checking on a Great Horned Owl nest within the same park(two owlets currently in that nest, maybe a week old). I couldn't get any confirmation if any of the owlets have hatched yet, but given how active and vocal the Long-eared Owls have been at the park the past two weeks I imagine the eggs must have just been laid very recently. Excited to watch the little ones grow!
