For my purposes I’d love to have an omnidirectional antenna with that performance but I’m betting the one they offer is highly directional and I’d have to know where to point it before I could expect to detect anything. Still…thanks for the lead and I’ll try to learn more.

Fred,
From what I have been told by one of the principals of CTT, the company that makes the BluMorpho tags (2.4 GHz), the Terra unit can detect these tags 1-2 km away with the supplemental antenna that Terra sells.

Hi Barb. I’ve had a Birdweather “PUC” for just about a year now and I like it. For me it’s worked best when I coupled it with a solar panel and It’s outside all the time now. Admittedly I like the idea of the extra capabilities of the competitor “Terra” unit but have my doubts about its capabilities to function as an RF tag tracker. Out-of-the-box I suspect it would be able to detect Bluetooth tags (on Monarch Butterflies for example) at maybe 50 to 75 feet away.
You can also see where Birdweather has now expanded their product line with an ultrasonic model for Bats. Lots of recent developments in remote sensing, tracking and pattern recognition. (Works on people too now but that’s a different story). At times I start to wonder very-much like Werner Heisenberg about the observer effect that says you can’t measure anything without impacting the outcome. The result is that the future becomes very “uncertain”.

Hi all,
I’ve been seeing ads on Facebook for this device which can identify and record bird songs. Has anyone used one? Is it worth $299?
Thanks,
Barb
