With a hat tip to Nico who was recently alerted by a friend that a bird was present a few weeks ago, I observed a Common Poorwill on Mt. Davidson tonight just prior to 7 pm. It was clucking and foraging widely on the northeast slope, the same location as the bird observed by many last October.
One way to locate and observe the bird without disturbing it is to scan the hillside while taking a video on your phone- eye shine is picked up on the screen from quite a distance. It soon ignores your presence and continues a pattern of hopscotch and loopy foraging and landing occasionally close, directly on the path.
Other than an unwell bird found at Stonestown Galleria and taken into Animal Care in December, this seems to be the first non-October record for the City- at least on eBird- and likely an overwintering bird.
