Erik Wing, the lead author was here in January giving a seminar at UAlbany. His broader research is in cognitive neuroscience aspects of expertise development. And, the chosen model system is the visual component of bird identification. The NBC article and his publication in the prestigious J. Neuroscience journal is focused a related aspect of his research, where he argues for long term cognitive benefits of exercising the expertise in birders. It was great to meet him.
