Subject: [sd-birds] Short-eared Owls
In the eastern part of the state, Short-eared Owls have been pretty easy to
find this winter, in the right conditions (calm) and habitat (large patches
of tall grass). Yesterday afternoon was a rare calm day, so I took a drive
through western Brown County, and eastern Edmunds and McPherson counties. I
found seven owls, singles and pairs (all reported on eBird).
Disappointingly, I just found two Rough-legged Hawks, together in one spot.
Besides a lot of pheasants and EC Doves, birding was slow, with one
Sharp-tailed Grouse and two Horned Larks rounding out the day.
