Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Hotspots for eBird Bar Charts January 15-21
Greetings,

Thanks for keeping the momentum going on these weekly hotspots! The same
number of listed hotspots were visited the second week as in the first
week. Perhaps we can increase that number next week?

As a reminder, or if you're just tuning in: this weekly project is about
plugging calendar week coverage gaps in eBird hotspot "bar charts" - which
species were observed during a given week of the year (each calendar month
is separated into exactly 4 "weeks" of 7 days each except for the 4th,
which may be shorter or longer). This project was started by John Bruin in
2024, and I'm taking it over in 2026.

Every week I'm sending out two lists of eBird hotspots. The first list
contains hotspots missing 10 bar chart weeks or fewer. Since most of these
were completed last year thanks to our efforts, these lists are quite small
in 2026, so in 2026 I'm adding a second list of "gap" hotspots - these are
hotspots that have bigger coverage gaps (3+ weeks) including the current
week, prioritized by number of weeks already covered.

The past week's list got Beverly and I to visit hotspots we hadn't visited
before. San Onofre SB was a long drive to get to, but well worth it. Quite
a unique beach and it was less busy than usual due to the lower parking lot
being closed (I believe it's reopened now). While we noted no rarities
here, it was fun to walk by the SONGS plant, see Brown Pelicans
interspersed with surfers, and Great-tailed Grackles trying to figure out
how to use somebody's propane stove and foraging closer than we've ever
seen them to the surf.

Next week we have a bigger list of hotspots nearing 100% bar chart
completion - with 9 total, one of which only needs this upcoming week to be
complete!

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/san-diego-county-avian-records-database/.
