As we get further into the winter and finches are arriving in force, it seems the greater Deerfield area is experiencing a sizable invasion of Evening Grosbeaks. Many of these small flocks have been sticking around for over a week or more now, making them generally much more reliable in the area than the typical random flyovers in other parts of the county. With how dramatically this species has declined in the past few decades, it's great to see. Below is a quick summary from eBird and town Facebook groups of sightings in the past month or so:
Coffeetown Rd., Deerfield: 5 birds in early December Mountain Rd. and Mountain Rd. Extension: as many as 14 birds over the past month and a half South Rd., Deerfield: as many as 11 birds for close to a month Pleasant Hill Rd., Deerfield: around 20 birds Church St., Deerfield: at least 4 birds frequenting the downtown area Stevens Hill Rd., Nottingham: at least 2 birds last week Black Hall Rd., Epsom: 5 birds in mid December Deerfield Rd., Candia: 4 birds on New Years
As food gets scarcer, these numbers will probably continue to increase! Most of these birds so far have been hanging around private feeders, but the general area is a great place to look right now for anybody hoping for these fun finches in the county. Bear Brook and Pawtuckaway SPs could be worth a shot in general, and there is parking in front of the library and behind the old town hall on Church St. as well, to try for that flock. The neighborhoods off Hartford Brook Rd. also have a small public park that could be productive if it's not completely snowed in. Maybe we'll get lucky with some Pine Grosbeaks or Bohemian Waxwings next!
