Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) (1)

- Pt. Piedras Blancas--elephant seal colony, San Luis Obispo, California

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S293371693
- Comments: "Spotted this small hawk right after I pulled out of elephant seal lot—maybe thirty or forty yards south on the west side of road. The hawk was either attacking a squirrel or some other small animal. It was flapping its brown wings like crazy and wasn’t quite landing. I was able to have clear views of its tail which had thick contrasting equal-sized bands of black-white-black-white. The white was bright and had no grey tones. Also, there was extensive white on the face, and a dark cheek patch, which would make it an immature bird and perhaps a light morph. A nice consolation prize after not seeing the rare plover I was hoping would be around. No photos."
