The 2025 Sturgis Christmas Bird Count (SDST) was held on December 14, 2025 under sunny, clear skies with calm winds and temperatures ranging from 11°F to 57°F. We had 12 participants in the field (7 parties) plus 1 feeder watcher. Total effort was 32.75 party-hours, including 9.5 hours on foot (7.5 miles) and 23.25 hours by car (232.8 miles). This year, notable absences include: Northern Shrike, Wilson's Snipe, American Kestrel, Brown Creeper, and Great-horned Owl. In all, we reported 43 species on count day and 2,634 total individuals: - Cackling Goose 3 - Canada Goose 462 - Mallard 82 - Green-winged Teal 10 - Canvasback 4 - Common Goldeneye 10 - Gray Partridge 21 - Sharp-tailed Grouse 49 - Wild Turkey 171 - Golden Eagle (count week) - Northern Harrier 2 - Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 - Cooper’s Hawk 1 - Bald Eagle 3 - Red-tailed Hawk 8 - Rough-legged Hawk 8 - American Coot 1 - Rock Pigeon 102 - Eurasian Collared-Dove 189 - Belted Kingfisher 1 - Lewis’s Woodpecker 7 - Downy Woodpecker 7 - Hairy Woodpecker 3 - Northern Flicker 11 - Blue Jay 118 - Black-billed Magpie 9 - American Crow 22 - Horned Lark 78 - Black-capped Chickadee 51 - Red-breasted Nuthatch 14 - White-breasted Nuthatch 8 - Townsend’s Solitaire 8 - American Robin 100 - European Starling 685 - American Tree Sparrow 3 - Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) 57 - Dark-eyed Junco (White-winged) 1 - Red-winged Blackbird 23 - House Finch 36 - Red Crossbill 1 - Pine Siskin 5 - American Goldfinch 30 - House Sparrow 229 Thank you to everyone who put in the time and miles to make the count a success.
