Hi folks,
I did a little CBC scouting in my neighborhood this afternoon. The best bird was a TENNESSEE WARBLER in tipus at 3937 Via Diego. This is just up the street from La Colina where a little sidewalk leads into a small group of condos situated between Via Diego and Bishop High School, which is to the west.
Overall, this area, like most areas featuring tipus, was not as birdy as in recent years, with Yellow-rumpeds, in particular, in low numbers. Birds like Townsend's Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets aren't down as much as the Yellow-rumpeds. So it's still worth checking these places.
Afterward, I birded both sides of Pesetas Lane, which really drives home that the activity levels are lower tipu-dominated places than elsewhere. While the tipus in the CenCal lot are not very active, the ironbark (pink-blooming) eucalyptus in the lot on the north side of the Sansum Clinic are jumping. I didn't find anything unusual, but there are lots of Yell0ow-rumpeds and hummingbirds here. It's certainly worth another look before count day. Note that I also checked the tipus in the Bishop Diego lot on the north side of La Colina, and they were very quiet.
I'll be checking more places with ironbark eucalyptus in the days to come.
