Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus) (1)
- Reported Nov 10, 2025 07:40 by Will Knowlton
- Davis Road--SLO County, San Luis Obispo, California

- Comments: "First heard as it flew over me while calling as I was checking a wildlife camera, so I was not prepared to get a recording of its "tri-ri-rip" flight calls. Fortunately, it kept flying in a straight line and landed a few hundred yards away, where it eventually flushed as I walked towards it. The included iPhone recording is from that second encounter. Habitat was short- to medium-length annual grassland."

- Reported Nov 10, 2025 07:32 by Nick & Jane
- Laguna Lake, San Luis Obispo, California

- Comments: "I think this is a slate-colored x red hybrid but not seeing the option on my ebird dropdown menu (doesn’t appear to be the sooty x red hybrid though please let me know if it is). The chest spots were reddish, tapering from thick (but not sooty thick) to light spotting on a white belly. The tail and portions of wings were red as well. What also defined this bird as a hybrid to me was its dual-colored red-and-slate patterned back (also a reddish crown). The cheeks had red splotches on slate coloring as well. The bill was bi-colored, brown on top with the lower mandible golden. The malars were a messy white, as was its throat, separated by black stripes. White bled up onto the face. The bird also displayed traces of white wingbars, pale edges to tertials, secondaries and primaries, and very distinct bright white fore-superciliums. Also noted was a slate wash on lower flanks. Paved loop area. Slightly blurry but detailed photos."

- Comments: "continuing bird first located here by Bob McCay on 4 nov. foraging in the Mid canopy of large eucalyptus trees. I had brief but good views of the bird. plumage resembles first fall male. The rusty reddish/chestnut color on flanks and the bright white wing bars were what first alerted me to the bird. Undertail covers were white, as well as the throat. There were white eye arcs, and a dark line through the eye. The head was greenish. streaks on back. I waited around for at least an hour hoping to get better photos of the bird, but alas, it just wasn't meant to be. Hopefully this bird will stick around and there will be more opportunities to photograph."
