I took a casual walk around the meadow and Big Laguna with family+dog this morning, and the birding was excellent. I wanted to report some highlights in case others are interested in these birds, but also to note that this wasn't really a focused birding trip. I suspect dedicated birding might turn up even more good stuff this week.
Lewis's Woodpecker, 3, in the separate group of pines at the southeast corner of Big Laguna (32.8788, -116.4600). One flew over and landed at the top of the pines, and I saw two others were already perched there.
Williamson's Sapsucker, 1 female in pines around (32.8710, -116.4644), while heading back through the pines toward the Mile 19 pullout and trailhead. Actively foraging.
Townsend's Solitaire, 1 briefly flew over with bluebirds near the southeast corner of Big Laguna (32.8769, -116.4627).
Cassin's Finch, 2 males, plus several other Cassin's/Purple Finches I couldn't ID, near both Big Laguna and Water of the Woods.
'Gray-headed' Dark-eyed Junco, with Oregon juncos near the southwest corner of Big Laguna (32.8784, -116.4632)
