Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] pelagic trip offering on November 1st
There is a 9-hour boat trip (8AM-5PM) being offered by Seaforth Sportfishing aboard the "Legacy" whalewatch boat on Saturday, Nov. 1st, that is sort of a "wild card" trip. This is not a bird trip per se and is not offered by the usual birding entities, but is strictly a Seaforth/Legacy trip. The idea is to view all offshore wildlife, with obviously marine mammals being an important component, so if whales are found, the boat will stay with them for some period of time. Currently, there are only a relatively small number of sign-ups (so lots of room!) but I asked the captain just yesterday about that and he said the trip is guaranteed to go. I asked how far offshore they are guaranteed to go at a minimum, and he said if there are birders aboard then they would go at least well into the San Diego Trough, beyond the Nine-Mile Bank--which is a reasonable distance. Although he also said that their overall direction may be more initially to the northwest. Anyway, if they indeed get out this far, then the trip should have reasonable potential. I plan on going given how far offshore they will go, although I am not sure what other "leader types" will be attending. I am just a passenger and "spotter," and plan on being in the wheelhouse, as usual, helping to spot and announce the more interesting birds, but I am not an official boat leader given it is a direct Legacy/Seaforth offering. So, don't blame me if anything doesn't go quite according to plan. Again, this is a bit of a "wild card" offering, although it is an interesting time of year to be that far offshore!

If you are interested, sign up directly through Seaforth, as with the regular pelagic trips. And given that there is PLENTY of space on the trip, one could also wait until just a few days out if one wanted to get a better idea of what the sea conditions might be.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
