Subject: [hmbirds] Two Great Horned Owls at Five Rivers
I saw one, and heard two, Great Horned Owls on the Vlomankill Trail near Fordhams Crossing on October 25 at approximately 620pm. I arrived at Five Rivers at 525pm with the hopes of either hearing or spotting a GHO. At approximately 600pm I was moving NW along the Vlomankill Trail when I heard the call of a GHO to the south. The call resonated through the woods significantly and I was uncertain if it was coming from on top of the hill west of the Vloman Kill, or if it was echoing from further south, along the Vloman Kill, toward Heron Pond. I suspected it was coming from the top of the hill, so I continued west, following a part of the trail onto the hill, but heard and saw nothing. I turned around and headed back down the Vloman Kill south and at approximately 620pm I heard another GHO call just north of Fordhams Crossing. I stood, watching and listening for a few minutes. The owl continued to call. Then I saw the GHO take flight, from a tree top to the west of the Vloman Kill, fly over the water, and then land in the top of a large pine to the east. I was able to watch this GHO, from a distance, in the dusk. Visibility was somewhat limited by the falling light, but the owl was observed and a white bib was clearly visible. After several minutes the GHO took flight again, and traveled north, through the trees, where I lost sight of it. I then heard two GHOs, in the same direction, duetting. I made two audio recordings at Fordhams Crossing, though they are of poor quality.
