The cold front that invaded Northwest Arkansas City and brought down our morning temps into the 40s also brought a bunch of sparrows. I picked up at least nine sparrow species birding roadside thickets in the former Beaty Prairie northeast of Maysville. The thickets are in the main composed of Giant Ragweed.
Nothing rare. ALL great. Welcome back!
At one point the welcoming party included a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK trying to catch mainly SAVANNAH SPARROWS hiding in a thicket. I got a good (for me) Sharp-shinned photo.
Here’s what I submitted to eBird: https://ebird.org/checklist/S280857255. This includes photos of some of the common winter sparrows like White-crowned. Also one I really like: a female Red-winged Blackbird in a ragweed thicket with a ragweed seed in its bill.
