Saturday we had a joint SCVBA/OSA field trip to the Little Uvas OSP, normally closed to the public, with co-leads Sarah Chan and Karen Rush. The five small ponds on the property have year-round, breeding *ruddy ducks* , and we found several of them. But the big surprises were how many ducks of five species could be fit onto a few little ponds: 43 *wood ducks* , mostly male, 100 *American wigeons* , 15 *gadwalls* , and 25 *mallards* in addition to the ruddies. On the pond also: a *sora* skulking in the reeds. Another surprise was a number of *purple finches*. All in all a very successful trip, with 51 species seen. And on the way out, I found a *yellow-billed magpie* sitting on a wire.
