Swamp Sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Oct 14, 2025 09:48 by Kevin Zimmer
- Atascadero Lake, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6667256&<ll...>,-120.6667256 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S279419919 - Media: 5 Photos
- Comments: "Popped into view but buried in the reeds in the small cove east of the parking lot in the SE corner of the lake. White throat, rusty crown bisected by narrow gray median stripe, very gray sides of neck and nape, clay-buff sides/flanks; very rusty wings (especially the greater coverts and folded secondaries; mantle pale brown with bold black streaks. It appeared in response to ‘pishing’, as did a Lincoln’s Sparrow and a couple of Song Sparrows in the same patch of reeds. I was intent on photographing a very visible Lincoln’s Sparrow, when my attention was immediately drawn to the Swamp Sparrow by a couple of phoebe-like chip notes. Sadly, I could not find a window in the dense reeds through which to photograph the Swamp Sparrow. It sat for a couple of minutes preening, and then dropped back into the reeds, not to be seen again. All of my photos are obscured by reeds, although, in composite, most of the critical field marks can be seen."

Briefly seen twice by Golden Gloves Banales. Another birder not on eBird mentioned seeing it this morning in same area as well. White undertail coverts and some white washed onto belly. Luminous golden otherwise except for olive-ish golden wash on cheeks/head and blue-grey wings. Short tail. Borbulous. No pics. No paparazzi please, the bird said. Kidding—looks were super brief. Booo. This is my third sighting of this bird since discovering it in a diff area of park. Wish I knew where this bird flies/teleports in from."
Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea) (1)
- Reported Oct 13, 2025 17:05 by Roger Hammer
- Meadow Park--San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6606531&<ll...>,-120.6606531 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S279375810 - Comments: "cont. bird feeding in the cherry trees against the south park border fence between the ped bridge and exercise station 11. i've seen these in MI but it was my first here. little sunball with gray wings. and after i lost it i was searching further north towards casa diablo then circled back to find Brian gazing up at the exact spot where I had the bird and where he and others have had it earlier in the day. bird has a favorite spot now. it was now too late to discern which warblers were who, but several were back in that spot. note: i don't know if these are Catalina Cherries (as called by a resident) or Broadleaf, as called by other birders. Anyway, these cherries are ripe and attracting a lot of birds."
