What could be better than 65 degrees with a breeze hiking the beautiful Rohrbaugh Trail on Dolly Sods, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its preservation as a Wilderness Area? Well….how about sitting in the sun on the rocky overlooking the entire Red Creek drainage, admiring the early fall colors. What could be better? Well……how about 15 Red Crossbills landing in a Red Spruce about 50 feet away, flying away, then returning, then flying, then returning…. And posing, turning their heads so all of us could see their colors and their amazing bills. Wow! (I’ve seen or heard RECRs several times this summer around the area (Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Loop Road, Sundew Trail on Dolly Sods), but this siting was the best ever).
