Overall bigger than the Spotted Sandpiper; conspicuous complete white eyering; two-tone straight bill, greenish at the base with a dark tip (terminal third of the bill); greenish-yellow legs; medium brown streaked breast; white belly and undertail; unmarked flanks; brown mantle with fine white spots; subtly bobbing, but not nearly as much as a Spotted Sandpiper.

Wading belly-deep in the water they were bending forward when probing, submerging head and neck in the water, causing the rump and tail to stick up.
Appearance includes a prominent white supercilium; slightly decurved black bill; wingtips extending beyond tail; scaly-patterned wings; spindly yellow-green legs.
