Following our big night of around a thousand, we tallied 371 nighthawks on 8/25 and 146 on 8/26 at Powder Mill Pond.
Tonight’s birds were all southbound and were very high up, several groups taking advantage of thermals to soar and get good lift. I’m sure we missed some in the blue sky.
Even as the sky darkened, a large flock of 75-100 nighthawks remained, foraging high over the pond, mixed in with several dozen distant swallows, and plenty of sallying cedar waxwings grabbing abundant, invisible flying insects.
Every night is different, and each night features its own magical moments.
The season tally is now over 2,400. There should be several more decent flights in the week or so ahead.
