Tonight we topped yesterday's impressive total with 979 migrating nighthawks.Austin Gelinas and Chuck Carlson helped me tally birds in 24 small to large groups of up to 220 birds. Migration started even before our official start time of 5:30 pm, and birds streamed steadily south for the first hour. A sudden shift seemed to bring birds across the pond from east to west, and migration continued in both south and west directions. Foraging birds dominated the skies over the field, pond, and surrounding hills for the last half hour or more of the count, and several dozen were still present when we left at 7:50 pm. The season total stands at 1,899 with plenty more migration still ahead. Hang onto hope, Concord and Franklin!
