Subject: [NHBirds] 144 Nighthawks- Franklin Falls
A good count for what really is still pre-season.  East or southeast winds had birds going in all directions requiring many to be thrown back to avoid a double count.  The flock directly overhead was painted golden by the setting sun - very lovely.
The Franklin Falls Recreation Area must be the Disk Golf capital of the state.  The guys are very interested in what I am doing and some recognize me and ask how the count is going.  Tonight after talking to a group  I heard one explain to the other as they walked away: "He's counting Common Nighthawks in migration."  Yes, corecto mundo!  These guys are alright.
Tomorrow doesn't look so good but Saturday is looking very promising. Last year on the 23rd with light W winds we counted over 1,300 and on August 23, 2023 we counted over 900 on light SW winds.  Nighthawk watchers should get themselves to either Concord or Franklin to help or just watch while the getting is good.
