There’s exciting news! This September we will be monitoring for raptors at Thatcher Park. Starting on Saturday, September 13, we will be kicking off monitoring the southbound migration of raptors with Hawkfest 2025! There will be all sorts of raptor related activities there including some educational birds you experience up close. You don’t want to miss this.
The following two weeks monitoring starts at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM. You can stop by whenever you would like, and stay as long as you want. Several groups will be in charge of record keeping, but anyone is welcome to come and help find and count raptors. Folks from the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club, Alan Devoe Bird Club, Audubon, and Five Rivers. Five Rivers will cover Wednesday the 17th.
The site is at the edge of a parking area overlooking the escarpment just below the main center and parking area. Bring a snack, a lawn chair, hat with a visor. Binoculars are essential, and a scope is a help if you have it. Bad Dad Jokes are also appreciated (by some of us anyway) but not necessary.
Special thanks to Chris Franks from the Alan Devoe Bird Club for organizing the count again this year. His commitment to continuing the data collection begun there many years ago in the interest of the birds and bringing people closer to nature has reenergized the hawkwatch.
