Subject: [SFBirds] Jaeger Morning
Parasitic Jaegers showed up sometime after 7 this morning after a quiet
start to the seawatch. From that time until the fog interfered with my
viewing around 8:30, multiple jaegers were constantly present, though not
in high densities. The most I saw in a single scope frame was five, with
others nearby, but they coursed back and forth too much to obtain a certain
count.
The highlight was my first Pomerines of the season, with a juv attacking a
Heermann’s and then a Parasitic, giving me a rare view of the two species
immediately adjacent to each other. Awhile later, an adult Pom flew by and
was attacked by an intermediate juv Parasitic, and shortly thereafter and
some distance from that adult, another adult Pom attacked a young
Heermann’s, grabbing it by the wing and flinging it to the surface. The
gull seemed to recover after a moment and flew back to the rocks.
Despite the good shearwater numbers not far south of me, I didn’t see any
before the fog lowered.
