Subject: [ia-bird] Yellow-crowned Night Heron
Larry Piatt, Dennis Thompson, Diane Dentlinger and I went to 269 Ave. in
Appanoose Count to look for herons and other birds. Two Green Herons were
seen and heard. Two brown herons were seen flying over and I believe they
could have been Yellow- Crowned Night-Herons but not sure. I had looked up
info on flying Night-herons and the legs were longer on the Yellow- Crowned
than Black-crowned and I believe this was true. We then walked down an east
road on the way back and Diane spotted an adult Yellow-crowned. Then we
had three brownish herons fly through the marsh area. We all agreed they
were too large for Green Herons. This area has been good for
Yellow-crowned for years but we have never documented nesting. If
interested birders who want to come to this area you it is a gated road and
it is a short walk to a bridge and marsh after this. The road going east on
your way down to the bridge also has marsh. Boots are not necessary unless
you want to walk into the marsh. We also stopped to see a Barn Owl in West
Centerville. Tom Johnson Mystic, Ia.
