Subject: [hmbirds] Thursday Birding 8/21
This week marked the second outing of our resumed Thursday Morning Birding walks, perfect timing as fall migration kicks into gear. Nine birders set out this morning at the Albany Pine Bush Karner Barrens East trail under bright, gray white skies and challenging viewing conditions. The glare made for plenty of silhouettes in the first hour, but the energy of migration was already in the air.

The soaked pine barrens carried the rich smell of earth after last night’s rain, though the trail itself was dry and easy to walk. Early activity included woodpeckers working low branches, a cooperative Magnolia Warbler in typical fall plumage, and calling Eastern Wood Peewees. Blue Jays, Black capped Chickadees, a Carolina Wren, Gray Catbird, and a Red breasted Nuthatch added to the chorus.

Ruby throated Hummingbirds were a highlight, at times three to five birds zipping around flowering plants at once. Near the vernal pond and landfill, activity picked up with an Ovenbird detected by Merlin and confirmed by several birders, along with Black and white Warblers and another Magnolia.

The morning’s identification puzzle came with a warbler that initially had everyone in the field leaning toward Bay breasted. There was really good input from the group on field marks and first impressions, and the discussion was lively. However, after reviewing some photos and footage later on, the consensus seems to lean more toward Blackburnian. Just pointing that out for clarity, while leaving room for individual interpretation.

As the sun broke through after 9:30, bird activity noticeably increased. On my own early exit/walk out, a Prairie Warbler was strongly suspected, and the flurry of migrants continued to build. All told, it was a rich and lively outing, full of great conversation and the excitement of a new season of migration. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

*Up next:* The Common Nighthawk Watch kicks off next Tuesday, August 26, at 6:00 p.m. at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center. Join us Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, in addition to our regular Thursday morning birding walks, as fall migration ramps up. We hope to see you out there!
