Subject: Re: [sd-birds] Osprey in NESD
Combined records from the SDOU and ebird websites show that in Marshall County, there have been 16 Osprey observations reported in 13 of the 19 years from 2006 - 2025.  Most of the reports were from the Roy Lake area plus other scattered locations.  Roberts County has many sightings along Big Stone Lake (the Big Stone Power Plant hosts a couple of nesting platforms) and a few Osprey have been reported elsewhere in Roberts County.  Day County has had many reports especially in the Enemy Swim and Waubay areas.  If it isn't entertaining enough watching an Osprey catch fish (believe me, it is), witnessing an ensuing chase by a Bald Eagle trying to steal its catch is worth double the price of admission!

An osprey has been seen and photographed at a place locals called Sigaty Slough...a spot on the north side of the township road that runs west from the Roy Lake west park entrance to Four Mile Lake.  How regularly does that happen in NESD? Susan Wismer,Britton
