Observation start time: 10:00:00 Observation end time: 12:00:00 Total observation time: 2 hours
Official Counter: Glen Chretien
Observers:
Visitors: 16 people engaged with the counter, asking great questions about the upcoming season.
Weather: My suspicions on the day were correct. Last nights cold front and trailing NNW winds brought cool crisp air to the summit for my first experience this summer. Temperatures rose from 62-67 during the short visit. The sky was painted in thin cirrus with plentiful sun. Visibility extended to a hazy view of Mount Washington. It was the first time in several visits this summer that I could see past Crotched mountain.
Raptor Observations: A family emergency cut short what was expected to be a full day of observation. Local raptor activity was greater than my previous summer visits. I showed up today fully expecting to realize the phrase that negative data is still data. A pleasant surprise was experienced in the second hour as I was treated to 2 migrants within 5 minutes. 12:26 pm marked the first official migrant as a broad-winged hawk flew SW and was tracked from in front of the Whites to below Powder Mill and then past Grand
Non-raptor Observations: 7 double-crested cormorants flying SE bisected a large group of ravens. The platform was also buzzed by a ruby-throated hummingbird. 4 local broad-winged hawks dove on each other about 50 ft above the observer. Adult bald eagle showed well over Crotched.
Predictions: Some forecasts suggest more winds from the N on Friday. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Glen Chretien (<b0ba_fet...>) Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory information may be found at: www.harriscenter.org
