Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Aug 15, 2025 10:00 by Petra Clayton
- Santa Rosa Creek-below Windsor, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-121.1064448&<ll...>,-121.1064448 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S267497897 - Media: 6 Photos
- Comments: "First ever eBird report of this species at this eBird hotspot.
Most likely the same bird that was first reported at Villa Creek on 7/21/25 (Makaleh Smith) and since then has continued at Villa Creek, but has also been reported at Cayucos Creek, Morro Creek and San Geronimo Creek. ---
The bird was reported early this morning at Villa Creek and observed flying "off between rocky bluff and eucalyptus grove."<a href="https://ebird.org/checklist/S267473321">ebird.org/checklist/S267473321</a> We observed it today at 10:00 a.m. foraging in the Santa Rosa Creek: Walking, running, hopping, standing still, wing-flicking, open wing-feeding..
Overall dull gray plumage with a tinge of cinnamon-brown on the head, neck and back; pale yellow eyes; dark bill, dark legs.
Northern Parula (Setophaga americana) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Aug 14, 2025 09:52 by Kevin Zimmer
- Pismo SB--Oceano Campground, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6265268&<ll...>,-120.6265268 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S267457708 - Media: 18 Photos
- Comments: "Continuing bird first reported by KH and HE at this location on 11 August. Small warbler with mostly grayish-blue upper parts, moss green patch in the center of the back, two broad white wingbars, yellow throat and upper breast with diffuse darker rust-orange breast band, belly and vent white, white arcs above and below the eye (although pattern largely obliterated by molt), and bicolored bill with dusky culmen but bright yellow lower mandible. This individual is in heavy molt, and may also have been very wet, making for an extremely tattered and messy look -- probably the saddest looking example I have ever seen of this normally attractive species, and markedly more ragged than it appeared in Herb's photos from just a few days earlier! This may be the reason for two atypical plumage features: a fairly distinct white supraorbital stripe in place of the upper white eye arc, and, the pale cinnamon wash down the flanks (almost reminiscent of a fall Bay-breasted Warbler). I heard the bird’s typical sweet chip note before seeing it, and later heard it sing a few pretty typical songs. Photos to be uploaded shortly."
