Subject: [ia-bird] pelicans on the move
Yesterday I traveled to and from Algona. Lots of rain-filled ditches, &
raised creeks & rivers from heavy rains.

South of Storm Lake along US 71 I saw what a thought was geese flying
toward me, and getting closer I saw the "flap, flap, gliiide" movement of
about 2 dozen pelicans.

Driving home on south US 69, there were places and homesteads where many
tree swallows fluttered above and around the road. Approaching Humboldt, I
saw more strings of "geese" to the east: I soon realized there were
hundreds and hundreds of pelicans!

I saw this in southern Minnesota five years ago in early September; is
mid-August a typical or an early time for pelicans to be migrating? Or did
heavy rains stir them up?

Thanks -
