Merlin's usefulness will improve as more good recordings are submitted and
more snippets of those recordings are entered into the program. Meanwhile,
we will occasionally be amused, often perplexed, and new users will
continue to need to be alerted and gently taught not to trust it 100%.
eBird reviewers should be thanked now and then for their volunteer time and
efforts at keeping the database as accurate as possible.
That said, I still don't understand this eBird message for a Florida
checklist:
*List-building checklist. This checklist has been flagged as a personal
list-building checklist. eBird requires a specific date and location to be
used in public output. This checklist and its observations do not appear in
public eBird outputs.*
The item in question is a Yellow-faced Grassquit, seen by at least two
boatloads of people (including 13 Missourians off the *Yankee Freedom*,
with the date and location given in the checklist, entered as a historical
record. If anyone can explain why this record is unacceptable for the
public record, please respond.
