I haven’t seen anything posted here so I wanted to share: A few days ago a small group of Whimbrels showed up at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. For the last couple of days, the birds have been in the marsh west of the camp store. And this morning, Dean Irwin found a Marbled Godwit loosely associating with the Whimbrel group.
Please note: This time of year, you cannot park in the parking area closest to the campground entrance. The best bet is to park in the west end fields near the septic field then walk towards the playground. Follow the paved road left (to your west) and the next road on your left past the playground is the road that leads to the camp store. Alternatively, you can walk south to the beach and then take the path to the camp store from the water.
The Godwit seems to be hanging around near the bridge with the memorial bench, but it has also been seen from the nearby restroom area looking west towards the marsh. This is roughly the same area where a Marbled Godwit has been seen in previous years.
