Subject: Dropped Pin No. 4 for Painted Bunting
Nearly a decade ago, Rodney Wright and Malcolm Gold kindly showed us where to find our first painted buntings. They directed us to the Lone Elm Industrial Park in Olathe. We were awed by the beautify of these birds and have never lost our fascination with this species.
Today, 6/8/2025, Piming and Judy Kuo and my wife and I returned to this spot of fond memories. Not a single gravel truck was in sight because this was Sunday. All was quiet. We parked on West 151st Street just east of the Hamm-Lone Elm gate (38.854701, -94.842880). Soon a brilliant male painted bunting appeared.
Two photos taken a few seconds apart at 11:45 a.m. may be viewed here:

For our 2025 Painted Bunting Discovery Tour, we have now found the fourth location in Johnson County harboring this species.
