Subject: [SFBirds] Still a few spaces on June 15th Noyo pelagic trip
Greetings Bay Area -

We still have a few spaces on our full-day trip Sunday June 15th from
Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg, and there is also room on the half-day trip the
following Monday. It's a bit far out to rely on the weather forecast,
but currently it's looking great for both days, NW winds of 10 knots or
so, just enough to get the albatross and Pterodroma petrels moving around.

Speaking of the latter, we have submitted our "Pterodroma sp." from May 24th

https://ebird.org/checklist/S242257377

to the CBRC as a Herald Petrel. Thus far there are reasoned arguments
from pelagic experts for both this and for a hybrid Herald x Murphy's
Petrel. We are awaiting comment from Hadoram Shirihai, who was looking
at the photos while at AMNH with drawers of Pterodroma open, and should
be able to provide a definitive word. In ether case we wanted to archive
the record with the CBRC. For those daring to go weeding on this
subject, check out this recent paper:
https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/ecology-and-evolution/articles/10.3389/fevo.2023.1123288/full

A reminder that this bird, 15 Murphy's Petrels, a Hawaiian Petrel,
dozens of Black-footed Albatrosses, Laysan Albatross, shearwaters, Ashy
Storm-Petrels, and Sabine's Gulls were all observed on a half-day trip
just 5-6 nautical miles from the coast. Consider going on both the
Sunday and Monday trips as, typical of pelagic birding, consecutive days
can be quite variable in the productive Noyo Canyon.

Cheers, Peter
