I ran the Goessel BBS route today (June 1, 2025) running through Marion and
McPherson Counties. Things of note.
1. Tyrant flycatcher numbers were down with just two Western Kingbirds
and two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. Odd
2. Hard to find Red-winged Blackbirds often. I used to find them at
almost every stop. I wonder if the cooler weather made a difference.
3. The variation in Dickcissel calls was interesting. In one two mile
section the call was a two note version that I would have not assigned to
the bird had I not seen it singing.
4. A lot more Yellow-billed Cuckoos than in the past.
5. Blue Grosbeak only presented in year 25 of my tenure (last year).
Today I had 4 (year 26). Not unexpected but odd that they have just now
shown up.

Perfect weather and roads. A week earlier things would have been too wet
on the mud roads and next week there might be a harvest underway. Some of
the wheat was really gold.
