On Sunday, June 1st, six people, including an 11-year old birder, joined me
at Strawberry Fields Nature Preserve. After the previous day's unrelenting
rain, stream levels on the property were high. The trail was muddy and even
under water in a few places, but we enjoyed a fine morning of birding.
We began the day with a singing Veery and a female American Redstart right
off the parking lot. Ovenbirds were present in many wooded areas, though we
were never able to get our eyes on one. Grassy fields yielded Eastern
Towhees, Song and Field Sparrows, Alder Flycatchers, a pair of Eastern
Kingbirds, and a distant Brown Thrasher. Warbler species we observed
included Blue-Winged, Yellow, and Chestnut-Sided and Common Yellowthroat. A
Scarlet Tanager and a Baltimore Oriole in the same tree, a low-flying Green
Heron, and a flock of 15-20 Cedar Waxwings were among the other highlights.
We also found 4 Indigo Buntings in various areas of the preserve, getting
our best looks when one sang from the top of a tree near the tanager and
oriole - very colorful!
Thank you to all the participants for their company and bird-finding skills.
