I am merely passing along information for anyone not receiving eBird alerts or not on the Facebook "ABA Rare Bird Alert" or "Kansas Rare Birds and Notable Sightings" groups!
Mark Nolen found a potential first state record of TROPICAL PARULA on May 6 and photographed May 7 in Reno County at Dillon Nature Center. It is building a nest in the large pine just west of the nature center, between the entrance road and the building. This is the pine right over the large bear statue there. If nest building continues, it is difficult to miss as it goes back and forth but we should try to avoid disturbing it. The best views are from a distance anyway along the entrance road.
This species does hybridize with northern parula so it could be paired with a northern parula. The entirely dark face with no white eye arcs, yellow malar, and rich yellow breast makes it appear to be a (phenotypically) pure tropical parula.
