Subject: [southbaybirds] Yellow Warblers at Lake Cunningham 5-06
This morning I birded Thompson Creek hoping for a Solitary Sandpiper but
was pleased with a SPOTTED SANDPIPER. The creek habitat was good for
migrants and deserves some attention. Hundreds of swallows foraged over
the creek, especially around Tully where they nest under the bridge.

I saw no swallows at Lake Cunningham which appears essentially dead.
Only a few ducks and gull were seen, no pelicans and only one GREEN
HERON. Some BUFFLEHEAD were in a small cove with a few egrets and
herons. The GREAT TAILED GRACKLES didn't seem to mind and were nesting
in cattails. The flooded fields have been drained and only a few CANADA
GEESE were lingering.

The native plant garden was quiet but I had one each WESTERN TANAGER,
BLACK HEADED GROSBEAK plus a small flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS here. I had
one HOODED ORIOLE here and two elsewhere.

I found a BLACK PHOEBE feeding nestlings in a Cliff Swallow nest under
the bridge. see photo

The good news was all the YELLOW WARBLERS seen or heard in the creek's
willows behind the water park. I heard five singing males and saw one
pair. A YELLOW RUMPED WARBLER remained, one PURPLE FINCH sang and a
HAIRY WOODPECKER was seen.

The only WESTERN FLYCATCHER for the day was heard as I was waiting for a
green light at Meridian and Coleman.

I heard both BLACK HEADED GROSBEAK and WESTERN TANAGER from my yard this
morning, so the migrants are slowly trickling in. According to Birdcast,
the next three nights show high migration for our area.
