Date: 5/5/25 5:40 pm From: Greene, Terri B <tgreene...> Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Yard birds and Bryan Park (Monroe and Lawrence Counties)
It’s nice to see and hear the Chimney Swifts overhead again. The Great Crested Flycatcher was back (April 24). And, I was delighted when a pair (male, female) of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks showed up at my feeders on April 30. I haven’t seen the male since then, but the female has been coming back, sometimes bringing a few friends along (4 females total on May 1). A Warbling Vireo made its musical debut in the backyard on April 23. I’ve been hearing warblers at Bryan Park . . . and at Jack’s house in northern Lawrence County. Oh, and it’s always fun to hear/see the gnatcatchers!
Dog Elliot pointed out a Hermit Thrush in the backyard to me early morning on April 19. Later that day, his gaze out the back door directed me to see my first catbird of the season at the suet feeder. Elliot’s interest in birds, however, earned him a scolding at Bryan Park today. He was investigating something beneath the branches of a large spruce tree. When I heard a sound, I quickly pulled Elliot back. At the same time, two thrashers—ready for battle—came down toward us. I suspect the sound I heard was a frightened, young thrasher. Elliot and I quickly departed so not to disturb them further.
Birds listed below were seen and/or heard at my home unless otherwise noted.
