A lovely morning along the Kaw. Chilly with a north breeze but beautiful. I logged 48 species in Burcham. And added another 6 in a Fitch late morning walk.
Burcham Walk
Sill lots of Baltimore Orioles (22); Warbling Vireos (11); Carolina Wrens (11) making the most noise.
Yellow-rumped Warblers (25) are still abundant and many are singing.
A Pileated WP called at the south end of the park, and I saw 3 Red-shouldered Hawks - one was in juvenile plumage & allowed a very close approach. Two fish crows called & 1 Least Flycatcher..
Scarlet Tanager (FOS 1 singing in early this morning in big trees near the RR Track south end of north woods
American Goldfinch (2 FOS in Burcham)
Green Heron 2 (FOS engaging in territorial battle - they growled aggressively looking at each other with wings spread & then flew off
Barn-swallow 1 FOS bathing in a puddle - colors glistened in direct morning sunlight - a beauty
Warblers (other than Yellow-rumped
Northern Parula 1
Northern Waterthrush 1
Prothonotary 1 female FOS - (Phil Wedge also saw 1 at south end of the park-mine was near mid-river trail
Fitch Walk was pretty quiet - (I got their late) - a lot Red-eyed Vireos were singing their monotonous notes. Two or 3 Red-shouldered Hawks made a lot of noise.
Ovenbird (2) FOS
Common Yellowthroat - 1
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1
Summer Tanager 1
Eastern Phoebe 1
Red-tailed Hawk 1
I did not list but I thought I heard a Kentucky Warbler sing in the deep woods - in usual breeding location north side 100 yards before trailhead
I saw a beautiful Black-swallowtail Butterfly working on some flowers with wings spread in direct sunlight just south of the Fitch Pond - more of nature's perfect art - fine day to be above ground!
