Spring awakens Old Hemlock’s heart,
Where dogwood blooms in petals bright,
Azalea flares in crimson art,
And morning’s gold dissolves the night.
Through wooded halls and emerald lanes,
The feathered choir returns once more,
Forty voices lift refrains,
A melody the hills adore.
Mourning doves with gentle sighs,
Kestrel sentries scanning high,
Thrushes weave their soft replies,
As robins paint the dawn-lit sky.
Blue-headed vireos call with grace,
Meadowlarks in fields declare,
Cardinals dressed in crimson lace,
Buntings scatter sapphire air.
Through hemmed-in woods, the echoes ring,
Red-winged calls in marshes flow,
Towhees flare their ruffled wing,
Goldfinches flash in fleeting glow.
Here, beneath the greening limb,
Where the ancient trees still stand,
Spring’s embrace is full to brim,
Its song alive upon the land.
Old Hemlock breathes in light once more,
Wrapped in May’s unfolding store.
