With ideal conditions overnight, it wasn’t too surprising to hear of a water bird fallout occurring around the state. That being said, 54 Brant at Moore Reservoir in Littleton was nothing to shake a stick at. A species so seldom encountered in the heartland of the state definitely catches anyone’s attention. Not to mention multiple species of Gulls and Terns. While busy at work, I couldn’t help to pull away and read these reports and it only made me think that I should take a minute and check out my own local lake, Lake Sunapee. During my lunch break I did just that and I never thought I’d find my own large Brant flock but lo and behold there it was. A flock of 51 birds on the water just outside Sunapee Harbor, my first for Sullivan County. I had to be quick to get back to work so I didn’t get a lot of time to explore but I made time on my way home to stop and scan the lake one last time. The following eBird checklist is what I was able to turn up just after 5pm. Who knows if the system passing through the next few days will yield any similar spectacles but it might be worth checking out your local waterbodies this weekend. You just never know what you’ll find. Good birding.
