Subject: [sd-birds] White-winged Juncos in Spearfish Canyon
I was excited to see a small flock of White-winged Juncos in Spearfish Canyon yesterday. They have white wing bars and a little more white in the tail. They breed in the Black Hills and winter in the eastern Rockies into north central New Mexico. They are now listed as a sub-species of the Dark-eyed Juncos and are a little bigger with a larger bill.

Seeing them was very special to me because Dr. Nathaniel Whitney, a founding member of SDOU I believe, first documented them in the Black Hills. His daughter Sue and I were college friends and she was my maid of honor!

Occasionally someone will ask me if I go out looking for something or if God just shows me something special that says “take my picture.” I always have my camera with me. I am thankful for the opportunities when I get them!
