Subject: Trip west
Jim Nickel and birder our way from Newton to Elkhart today. Our first stop was at Quivira, where we found plenty of water and a pretty good mix of birds. Nothing stood out apart from a piping plover. We got to the grassland about 2 o’clock. Even with a late start, we had some pretty good birds. A burrowing owl at the dog town northwest of point of rocks was a nice find. Middle spring had a lot of sparrows and three species of warblers to include orange crowned warbler, yellow rumped warbler with both Audubon and Myrtle, and one very brilliant Townsend warbler. As the rain set in in the evening, things got pretty slow.
