Hi Central Valley birders,
The City Nature Challenge took place this past weekend and the Sacramento Region did great with a record number of total observations (currently 10372) and 168 species of birds found in the nine county region. If you photographed or audio recorded birds in Sacramento, Yolo, Sutter, Yuba, Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, or San Joaquin counties from April 25th-28th consider entering those records into iNaturalist. We're currently one off our record total of 169 species. There are at least a few species that were recorded and potentially photographed but not entered based on eBird reports. Here are a few that I know about:
Greater Scaup- Lincoln WTP Red-breasted Merganser- Folsom Lake Lesser Nighthawk- Payen Road Costa's Hummingbird- southeast Sacramento County Pacific Golden-Plover- Yolo Bypass Snowy Plover- Yolo Bypass Semipalmated Sandpiper-Cosumnes Preserve Brown Pelican-Sherman Island Western Flycatcher- many Dusky Flycatcher- Mather Lake Grasshopper Sparrow- Meiss Road
I'm sure there are others that I didn't find. If you are able, please help bring up the numbers by entering any bird pictures or recordings you have and make this event an even bigger success. Thanks and good birding,
