4/23 Milford, Connecticut Audubon coastal center, 10am-1PM, high
tide-receding, sunny, breezy, 65-70F.
Very, very busy at the center today- both human visitors as well as
waterfowl on the marsh and land birds.
On the Marsh: 1 American Oystercatcher, 15 Greater Yellowlegs, 6 Great
Egrets, 2 American Black ducks, 1 Mute swan, 33 Double crested cormorants
diving & feeding, then sunning on the marsh, 6 Ospreys (our 2 on the nest
as well as 4 others flying over), 2 Red breasted mergansers.
Our 2 ospreys were busy incubating eggs as well as changing of the guard so
each could fly around.
On the grounds & feeders: 1 Eastern Phoebe, 1 Eastern Towhee, 1 Chickadee,
numerous starlings, Common grackles & Red winged blackbirds, 5 Cowbirds, 4
Fish Crows ( 1 with white on its back & tail), 4 Northern Mockingbirds in
territorial displays, 4 Northern Cardinals, many House sparrows, 7 White
throated sparrows, 3 Song sparrows,& 7 Tree swallows ( 2 on the wires & 5
flyovers). Our Purple Martin colony has gotten busy, with at least 17
flying around and examining the gourds for nesting).
I walked along the sandbars earlier- seeing 4 Piping Plovers, and a pair of
nesting Oystercatchers. One of the Oystercatchers chased off a crow . 6
Red breasted mergansers.
